Searching for the essential (continued)
This week I look at, or should I say listen to, 12 sounds that make me go ahhh! as I continue my quest to find what is essential to me. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude for the ability to hear. There are so many lovely sounds that make my heart sing when I hear them. Of course, there are those sounds I'd prefer not to hear, too. Fortunately, I am able to shut those out by focusing on something else. Here are just a few along with a little Haiku:
Early morning light
Your sweet song is my delight
All is well this day
–LF Hawkins
Among the sounds that make my heart sing, that make me go ahhh! are birds singing their beautiful songs in the early morning light. I have listened to them for years and can identify many of them by their sound before I ever catch sight of them. Whether the "cheer, cheer" of the cardinal or the "squawk, squawk" of the night heron, I love to hear their sound, which alerts me to their presence so that I can look about and catch sight of them as they fly by.
You play unaware
Your laughter fills the air
Sweet child, your are loved
–LF Hawkins
During our most recent cruise, I realized just how much I love the sound of children laughing. There were so many little ones this trip which is unusual. But perhaps they were more noticeable since I had just learned the Friday before we left that I will become a grandmother in April. Could those little giggles have actually been the reflection of my own heart giggling with pure joy at the prospect of holding my first grandchild?Gentle rain falling
Like a lullaby playing
Brings sweet dreams and rest
–LF Hawkins
I love the sound of a gentle rain on the roof. It relaxes me and makes me want to stay in my PJ's all day. On nights that it rains, I find I have the best sleep. It reminds me that I don't have to be anywhere but snuggled up in my bed.
Where does the wind go?
Is that you God, passing by?
Sweet is your caress
–LF Hawkins
The wind rustling in the trees makes me think that God is near. It's sound attracts my attention in time to see the leaves flap as they touched by the wind's movement or is that really God walking by?Energize my soul
You Gypsy guitar playing
Make me dance away!
–LF Hawkins
Lovely guitar and piano music is another sound that brings me joy. Most music actually. I love Latin style music, jazz and new age music most. When listening to jazz, I always try to listen for the sound of the clarinet, an instrument I played in high school and wish I still knew how to play. Listening to music can relax me, energize me and inspire me. It can help me focus on homework or painting or whatever project I am working on. And I especially love music that makes me happy and makes me want to dance!Sounds of you living
Even your blasted snoring
Give meaning to life
–LF Hawkins
My husband's snoring is a beautiful sound, even though it disturbs my sleep. I'll gladly wear my ear plugs to be able to have him in my life. I can't imagine not being able to hear that sound. It must be terrible to lose a spouse and not be able to hear their breathing or snoring after years of it being a part of one's life.
