HUM 6353 – Creative Post #1

Searching for the essential.

Last October, I took a watercolor portrait painting workshop with Mary Whyte, an incredible artist and woman. Over the course of the 4 day workshop, she repeated something that has resonated with me from the first moment I heard it. "Find what is essential to you!", she repeated each day. Mary suggested that the path to find that which is essential to yourself could be found by writing down a dozen things that make you go ahhh! She suggested that we write 12 things that we see, 12 things that we hear, 12 things that we touch, 12 things that we taste, and 12 things that we smell.

I have been to busy to do this all year (or at least that is what I tell myself), so I going to make this my creative practice in hopes of discovering that which makes me go ahhh, in hopes that it will enlighten me and help me find my voice as an artist. As this evolves, so too will new artworks centered on my discoveries.

This week I thought about sight and am stuck at 7. Here they are.

Sight
1.  The red, purple and orange sky at sunset with its reflections over the river.
2.  The flock of white ibis flying by my window as they go in and out of the canal near my home.
3.  My handsome son and his beautiful wife.
4.  My husband, the love of my life.
5.  My 4 dogs excitement to see me when I return home each day.
6. The beautiful aquas, teals and deep blues of the Caribbean waters.
7. Works of art that make me wish I had the expertise to have created.
