Zentangle
Zentangles are trademarked doodles. All of us have doodled at one time or another, and this is why I selected this as this week's creative practice. There are thousands of different ways to doodle. It is really just making patterns out of doodles. I put it inside an egg shape as we are approaching Easter and the turquoise background I had made first just shouted Easter egg.
This type of project is quick, portable and easy to replicate so that the patient can create more designs long after you have left. The activity of making the patterns is very therapeutic in that you become absorbed in drawing the pattern and the repetition of shapes is somehow relaxing and calming to the mind.
This project can be done by all ages by everyone. We have held sessions with the staff and patients on several occasions and the results were wonderful as each person created their own unique patterns after being shown a poster with the various types of Zentangle patterns. Some started out with the existing designs but most everyone added their own unique mark.
All that is required to complete this project is some good quality paper, some watercolor paint and a black marker or gel pen. It can be done without the watercolor, but I like having some color in the background.
